The backyard
Summer 2004: The vegetables are
planted to the rear, with the cutting garden in front of that.
The bed to the front of the picture is the back half of the driveway
bed. We've dug out about half the irises (some remain in the
bottom left), amended the soil, and mulched with 1/4" pebbles.
This bed is going to be moderately xeric: the plants get hit by
the lawn sprinkler system but pretty lightly. So far, the xeric
plants seem happy and the non-xeric ones only moderately so, so we'll
have to see how the bed develops. I like the hollyhock.
It's a holdover but we didn't get to see it last year because it was in
a former area of lawn and was probably mowed. Other plants in the
bed include agastache (great plant for Colorado), germander, anthemis,
echinecia, and daylilies.
